On Saturday, 8/28, we had a super helpful workshop with Hannah Cole, a tax expert who specializes in working with creative businesses and artists. She shared practical advice and encouraged us to keep making art and keep improving our systems to professionalize our freelance work – whether that’s art-making, curating, teaching private lessons, mentoring, or all of the above,
A long-time working artist with a high-level exhibition history, and a tax and money columnist for the art blog Hyperallergic, the financial challenges of freelancers and small creative businesses are both relevant and personal to Hannah.
She discussed the basic tax equation, self employment tax and the estimated quarterly tax system, audit concerns for the creative person, and other tax issues specifically relevant to teaching artists. We also had time for Q&A, which was great to get some of our burning tax questions answered by a pro.
